Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin Will Give a Seminar as an Invited Guest Speaker at Wrocław University of Technology

Our Department Head, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin, will be attending the seminar organized by the Department of Geodesy and Geographic Information at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, one of the oldest universities in Poland, as an invited speaker on November 20, 2025.

The seminar will be held at 09.15 local time in hall 2.10 L-2 (Cinema Hall) located in the GEO-3M building.

Seminar Title

“The Link Between Surface Temperature and Land Cover Across Climate Zones”
(İklim Bölgeleri Arasında Yüzey Sıcaklığı ile Arazi Örtüsü İlişkisi)

Content of the Study

The study that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şekertekin will present examines the relationships between surface temperature and various land cover indices in four different Köppen–Geiger climate classes using Landsat 8 satellite images.

In the research;

  • NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)
  • NDBI (Normalized Difference Structural Index)
  • NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index)
  • NDBaI (Normalized Difference Bare Index)

Common spectral indicators such as were used. The study areas are Kars (Dfb), Kilis (Csa), Cairo (BWh) and Malanje (Aw) cities with different climate characteristics.

The results show that the relationship between surface temperature and land cover varies significantly depending on climate type. It is emphasized that vegetation has a much stronger cooling effect on surface temperature in tropical regions. Conversely, in arid and desert climates, artificial surfaces have been found to significantly increase surface temperature. These findings highlight the need for climate-based strategies for urban climate management and efforts to mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) effect.
