Department Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin Presented a Paper at the International GEOBENCH Workshop

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin participated in the 3rd International Workshop on Evaluation and Benchmarking of Sensors, Systems, and Geospatial Data in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (GEOBENCH 2025), held in Wrocław, Poland, on November 20–21, 2025, and gave a scientific presentation on behalf of our department. Supported by ISPRS and EuroSDR, the workshop brought together world-leading researchers in the fields of remote sensing, sensor technologies, benchmark analysis, and data quality.

At the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin presented his study titled “Examination of the Relationship Between Surface Temperature and Spectral Land Cover Indices for Different Köppen Climate Classes” which he conducted with Dr. Lecturer Emirhan Özdemir, Lecturer Rüştü Çallı, and Lecturer Mitat Can Yıldız. In this study, the relationship between surface temperature (LST) and spectral indices representing land cover change (NDVI, NDWI, NDBI and NDBaI) in cities belonging to four different Köppen-Geiger climate classes was comprehensively analyzed. The cities of Kars (Dfb), Kilis (Csa), Cairo (BWh), and Malanje (Aw) were selected as examples in the study, thus revealing how climate shapes LST-index relationships with an inter-city comparative approach.

The findings indicate that temperature is determined by different terrain components in each climate zone; for example, in tropical climates, vegetation provides the strongest protection against heat, while in desert climates, temperature is more affected by artificial surfaces and bare soil. These results highlight the need for climate-based approaches to combat the urban heat island effect.

This internationally acclaimed presentation by our department faculty member not only contributed to the scientific visibility of our university but also made a valuable contribution to the literature with its original methodological approach addressing land cover-temperature relationships in different climatic conditions.
